St Benedicts Abbey at Fort Augustus is a magnificent historic building now converted into a variety of residential apartments available for self catering holidays. It is an ideal holiday location for the larger party as a number of properties can be booked in close proximity to one another giving flexibility of accommodation whilst also offering a share of facilities within the Abbey complex.
In addition to the comfortable furnishings of the apartments and cottages there is the Highland Club Lounge with Wi Fi access, comfortable seating, full size snooker table and table top football, great as a communal meeting point and large enough to accommodate everyone.
The Abbey itself is set in 21 acres of mature grounds which extend down to the southern shores of Loch Ness. The grounds offer a loch side barbeque area; ideal for catering for larger numbers.
For the more active members of the group, not content to soak up the stunning views, may wish to try out the cricket pitch and nets, tennis court, croquet lawn, boules terrain, badminton, 5 a side football or table tennis. There is also a giant chess set and for the younger visitors a woodland adventure playground. Fishing can also be arranged locally.
The abbey is only a short walk from the picturesque village of Fort Augustus, at the southern most tip of Loch Ness. Here you will find shops, heritage centres and eating establishments. It's an ideal place to watch boats navigate the Caledonian Canal with its impressive loch system.
The Caledonian Canal opened up the Great Glen to commercial shipping by linking the great lochs that line the glen, including, of course, Loch Ness. These days its mostly private pleasure boats that pass through the canal. There are several pubs, restaurants and cafés on the canal side and there is nothing better than spending a sunny afternoon relaxing on the canal side with a drink or a meal watching the boats pass through the lock gates in the centre of Fort Augustus village.
