Originally a military fort and an abbey – today, the Abbey, a grade A listed building has been renamed as the Highland Club and renovated to provide around a hundred high quality holiday and residential 1, 2 and 3 bedroomed apartments in a unique location at the southern tip of Loch Ness.
Though none of the apartments are large, as in lots of bedrooms, (the largest sleeps 6 ) they are spacious and luxurious. Ample Cottages have several of these luxury self catering properties so are able to offer multiple rentals for large groups. The apartments lend themselves perfectly for groups and families wishing to have their own privacy but be near the action, and of course no one needs to drive!
The
abbey is only a short walk from the picturesque village of Fort Augustus
and is set in 20 acres of grounds with tennis court and cricket pitch. There
are large expanses of lawns and mature garden grounds which go right down
to the shore of Loch Ness where you can spend an afternoon fishing or splashing
about in the water or just looking out for Nessie! The monks that used
to live at the abbey have eye witness accounts of sightings of the Loch
Ness monster
On the other boundary runs the Caledonian Canal - the canal that opened up the Great Glen to commercial shipping by linking the great lochs that line the glen, including, of course, Loch Ness. These days its mostly private pleasure boats that pass through the canal. There are several pubs, restaurants and cafés on the canal side and there is nothing better than spending a sunny afternoon relaxing on the canal side with a drink or a meal watching the boats pass through the lock gates in the centre of Fort Augustus village.
There
are lots of touristy things to do here and activity holidays are very popular
in the Great Glen. There are both hill and low level walking routes a’plenty
and mountain biking is also popular - the world
mountain bike championships are held just an hour from here, at Fort William.
There is lots of fishing in the area and the Fort Augustus golf club is
only a few hundred yards from the abbey. You can practice your putting
on the greens around the abbey. The opportunity to take a cruise
on Loch Ness should not be missed and also a visit to the Loch Ness Monster
exhibition at Drumnadrochit, combine that wit a visit to Urquhart castle
and you have the makings of an excellent day out in any weather.
