Places to Visit

Arisaig 3 miles, gateway to the small Isles Passenger boats sail from Arisaig most weekdays during the summer to any one of the four small islands of Rhum, Eigg, Muck or Canna. The Land, Sea and Islands Visitor Centre in Arisaig opened in July 1999 on the site of a derelict smiddy in a stunning situation in the heart of the village.

Arisaig the Safe Place. So thought Vikings, early Christian Saints, Catholic Priests. Crofting, fishing, church history and marine life, the SOE and the films made here - 'Local Hero' being one of the most famous - are amongst the contents. The old forge has been renovated and forms a focal part of the display. A small shop at the Centre sells local and island crafts and cards, as well as books on natural and local history, and provides information for visitors on what to see and where to stay in the area.

Mallaig 10 miles, this is the largest fishing port on the west coast of Scotland, only 12 miles from the cottages and a working port full of fishing boats of every shape and size. The tightly knit community of fisher folk, who dedicate their lives to harvesting the bounty from the sea, also provide the crew for the town's famous Lifeboat. Mallaig is renowned for the plentiful landings of prime fish, much of which finds its way to European tables, as well as its superlative kippers.

Glenfinnan 12 miles, the world-renowned story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's fight for the British throne gathered momentum at Glenfinnan where he raised the Jacobite standard and rallied his clansmen for battle. Loch Shiel, here is flanked by steep mountains on both sides and from the Glenfinnan monument you get a truly awe inspiring view. Turn your back to the Glenfinnan monument which was built by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale in memory of all the clansmen who had fought for the cause, and you can see the viaduct made famous through the filming of Harry Potter. In the summer months, the Jacobite steam engine runs from here to Fort William and Mallaig now considered to be among the finest railway journeys in the world, offering a perspective of scenery not available by road.

Morar sands 7 miles, with views of Eigg and Rhum. Halfway between Arisaig and Mallaig, stop and admire the beautiful Morar estuary, a huge expanse of gleaming sand at low tide and a beach walker's ideal. Observe in passing the sheer weight of water pouring into the estuary from the falls of Morar, themselves fed by the shortest river in the United Kingdom (just a quarter-mile long). Loch Morar, over 1000 feet deep, is one of Scotland's deepest and provides a lovely walk along its northern shores with vast vistas of loch and mountain scenery. Legend has it that "Morag", perhaps a relative of "Nessie", lurks in its depths.
